The Government Commission has approved an agreement with the l’Institut d’Estudis Catalans (IEC) to launch the project “Fostering the use of Catalan in education and free time and complementary activities in the city of Barcelona”, the goal being to foster and strengthen the use of Catalan among teenagers and young people.

The agreement will be valid until 31 December 2026 and is for a direct one-off subsidy of 1,550,000 euros, equating to 95.06% of the overall project cost, which is 1,603,493 euros.

The IEC will head the following:

  • Design of training tools to improve knowledge and linguistic uses.
  • Awareness and training of professionals in recreational education in terms of their linguistic role.
  • Proposals for contract clauses to ensure the knowledge of Catalan among staff in this sector.
  • Creation of specific resources and analysis of existing programmes.
  • Development of a campaign promoting the use of Catalan among teenagers and young people, featuring youngsters themselves.

This collaboration, which cannot be channelled through a public call owing to its specific nature, will improve efficiency in public management and strengthen Barcelona’s commitment to Catalan language and culture.

The expenditure will be executed in the 2025 and 2026 financial years, with 640,000 euros and 910,000 euros respectively, and remain conditioned by the existence of sufficient credit in the corresponding budgets.
