Barcelona's Muslim community prepares to celebrate Eid al-Fitr
On 30 or 31 March, celebrations will be held to mark the end of the month of Ramadan. Muslim communities all over the world, including those is our city, have been fasting throughout the month, fulfilling the fourth pillar of Islam. During this month, Muslims fast from dawn till dusk. The return to normality, particularly with regard to meal times, is celebrated with the festival of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the fasting for the holy month.

It is a day of great joy, when the community gathers together early in the morning to say a community prayer and after this they spend the rest of the day visiting friends and relatives and people in need or who are alone. Before the festival prayer, the head of the family has to give a charitable donation of food (zakat al-fitr), equivalent to one meal for each member of their household.
In Barcelona, a number of Muslim communities and other entities have organised community Iftars where people come together to break their fast, and they have invited local residents, friends and collaborators to share this special moment with the citizens of Barcelona. Some of the city’s entities and communities have also handed out Iftars in their premises throughout the month of Ramadan or have held open prayer sessions. See the article “Community iftars, demonstration of a culture of peace and coexistence” (Spanish).
Some of the city’s Muslim communities celebrate Eid al-Fitr in municipal facilities or in the streets, as the usual prayer rooms and spaces are too small to hold the large numbers of people who come to prayer, many more than on a normal day. Many Muslims celebrate it in the prayer rooms and some communities do so in these municipal spaces, sometimes organising different shifts. These spaces include (LAST UPDATED 28/03/2025):
